The best time to travel to Madrid is in the fall or spring during the months of September to November or March to May. If you are looking for upscale apparel stores, check out the streets around Gran Via. The Calle de Preciados is probably the busiest street, hosting stores like H&M, Pimkie, and Zara.
We settled on Segovia, which is a short train ride away from Madrid. To be honest, some parts felt a little touristy, but it was also really pretty and it was amazing to see the aqueduct that was built in 1 B.C. We also loved the beautiful cathedral and stunning castle that was Disney’s inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle at Disneyland. We stayed at the Westin Palace Madridand it was one of the most lovely hotels.
However, it isn’t as centrally located as the previous areas so you’ll need to take the metro to get to Madrid’s top tourist attractions. La Latina refers to the area just south of the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral. It’s within walking distance to Plaza Mayor and home to El Rastro flea market, the biggest in Madrid. It’s a very walkable area with elegant architecture and excellent tapas bars, many of which are clustered along Calle de Cava Baja.

Many locals leave the city to escape the crowds during summer, most notably during August, which makes Madrid feel more like an attraction and less like an authentic Spanish city. If a low hotel rate and minimal crowds are your priority, visit during winter.
The market’s beautifully intricate wrought iron building, erected in 1916, is worth a visit in itself. The centerpiece of the park is the Crystal Palace, an extraordinary feat of design. You can also rent a rowboat and drift across the shimmering Retiro pond. It runs more frequently and is located within the airport in Terminal 2 and 4. It’s also easy to transfer lines to get to your final destination within the city center.
